THE ARGOLID PENINSULATolonMartian Risk: some, but not many Brits Tolon, whilst no longer the untouched fishing village Colin Murison Small “discovered” in 1961, and in high season hard to justify as hidden, remains a pleasant resort with a wonderful long sandy beach and an idyllic setting, facing south across a wide bay dotted with islets and fringed with the mountains of the peninsula to the east – one of the most magical panoramas in all Greece. Being only a short drive south of Nauplion, it is a perfect base for those wanting to combine a seaside stay with visits to the rich archaeology of the area. It becomes crowded in high season, but may nonetheless be a good choice for a mixed group needing a mixture of facilities – boat trips, water sports, excursions, night life and spectacular views. You are only a short distance from Epidaurus so might take in a performance at the theatre – ancient classical plays or classical or traditional Greek musical presentations between the end of June and the end of August.
